The Head of Customs of Cuba begins by thanking the television space, in order to give precise information on the new measure previously explained by our Prime Minister: Manuel Marrero Cruz.
Regarding food and hygiene items, he explained, that they are considered to be miscellaneous [1] and importation by passengers is allowed up to a total value of 1000.00 USD, in accordance with the provisions of the aforementioned Decree Law; and customs duties are paid, according to the value of the import that is made.
On the other hand, the quantities by type of articles allowed to be imported on each trip are defined, provided for in Resolution 206, of the Head of the General Customs of the Republic, of June 30, 2014.
There are regulations established by the phytosanitary and veterinary authorities, for certain products that may be susceptible to constitute risks; aspects that are also part of international sanitary controls.
Regarding medicines, Nelson Cordovés Reyes, Head of the Customs of Cuba mentions that these are defined in the aforementioned Decree Law, they are exempt from paying customs duties, authorizing their non-commercial importation up to 10 kilograms as long as they come in their containers. originals, which is regulated by Resolution 131 of August 13, 1992 of the Minister of Public Health.
Exceptions are those whose importation is prohibited by international regulations and those of our country, as they constitute drugs or others with similar effects.
It should be noted that the measure temporarily flexes, until December 31, 2021, the tariff treatment of food, hygiene and medicines by passengers, as accompanied luggage, without import value limit and free of the payment of tariffs. They can be imported without limit of quantities, in correspondence with the exemption from payment of tariffs established by Resolution 309 of the Minister of Finance and Prices, of July 15, 2021. He stressed that these items must come in separate packages from the rest of products, in order to facilitate and speed up the border crossing of passengers and avoid them having to separate these products from the rest, at the time of customs clearance.
The General Customs of the Republic established the working procedures for the correct implementation of this measure and the adequate facilitation and security of the border, in the fulfillment of the mission of the institution.
We suggest that passengers bear in mind the regulations established by the Ministry of Public Health, regarding medicines, which their importation is prohibited through international regulations and those of our country, as they constitute drugs or others with similar effects, as well as Agriculture (in particular Animal and Plant Health), for foods of animal and plant origin, with health risks.
