“The #CódigoDeLasFamilias has developed something very novel: affection as a legal value. That is why it has been called the Code of affections. It has an undisputed ethical value, it teaches us to think and gives us the reins to educate future generations,” said Díaz-Canel, adding the hashtag #CódigoSí to his message.
The final version of this Law was approved this June 22 in the National Assembly of People's Power (Parliament), after a consultation process in which more than six million Cubans participated, in around 70 thousand meetings from the communities.
Specialists from the country agree that the Code is a reflection of the reality of Cuba, and a solid proposal that responds to problems sustained for years.
As a novel element of the regulations, it highlights the reinforcement of the concept of progressive autonomy to offer children and adolescents the right to function in the family environment as they develop mentally and physically.
It incorporates the protection of minors in exceptional and disaster situations, and the greater coherence of the principle of their best interests with their duties.
This legal document also consolidates the urgent protection against discrimination and violence, while offering the possibility of filing a complaint to anyone who knows about these facts.
It also adds a variant to state the need for labor, salary or social assistance protection for family caregivers who are of active working age and who left their profession or trade to dedicate themselves to that task.
Oscar Silvera Martínez, Minister of Justice, signified during the sessions of the Parliament that it is a more solid Law because it is imbued with popular sovereignty, revolutionary essence, protection of rights and a high human value.
