The importance of unplugging unused outlets

Electrical devices that remain plugged in even if we do not use them represent, on average, almost 10% of the monthly electricity consumption in each home. This is what is called “phantom consumption”. For example, leaving the TV ready to turn on from the remote control or plugging in a lamp throughout the day so you don't have to do anything more than press a button are cases that are included in this type of expense.

The explanation is simple. Many of these devices have a type of pilot light or a timer that consumes electricity. Therefore, getting into the habit of unplugging them when they are not going to be used will lead to a considerable reduction in your electricity bill each month.

Keeping the devices plugged in, in addition to the expense involved, reduces the useful life of each device, that is, the estimated time in which the instrument will fulfill the function for which it was created. This is because by remaining connected to the light, the plate continues to receive constant energy to the point of being able to suffer extreme heating.
Solutions to avoid “phantom consumption”

The easiest solution is to be aware of the problem it poses and get into the habit of disconnecting the technology that we are not going to use. However, there are other ways to solve the problem, such as using power strips with a switch that can be turned off when we stop using the devices.

Another slightly more complicated way is to install a timer on devices such as televisions or computers so that they disconnect completely during those hours when they are not going to be used.
