At the beginning of 2021, the world population was estimated at 7.83 billion people, of whom around 5.22 billion used a mobile phone. On average, each user uses 7.5 different social networks in the month. To appreciate the magnitude of the digital world, I share statistics from the American company Domo on what happens on the internet in one minute: Tiktok users, a Chinese social network, watch 167 million videos; Facebook Live gets 44 million views, 12 million users send a text, photo, or video from one Apple device to another, six million people shop online, YouTubers stream 694,000 videos, Microsoft Teams connects 100,000 users, while on Instagram they share 65,000 photos, on Netflix they stream 452,000 hours of video streaming (a type of multimedia technology that sends video and audio content to your internet-connected device), they spend $283,000 on Amazon services, and 5.7 million searches are performed through Google.
In 2016, users of Snapchat (a messaging application for smartphones with multimedia support for image, video and augmented reality photo filters) shared 527,000 photos per minute, and in 2021 the number reached two million. In 2017, 452,000 tweets per minute were published on the social network Twitter, while they currently reach 575,000. And if in 2020 Netflix users transmitted 404,000 hours per minute, transmissions had grown to 452,000 hours in July 2021.
To put these statistics in relation to Cuba in context, it can be stated that, in the case of our country, Facebook is the most used digital social network, and according to the Statcounter analysis website, in October 2021 it had 77% of market share, followed by Pinterest (17%), Twitter (3%), YouTube (less than 2%), and Tumblr and Instagram (with the remaining 1%).
Given this scenario, it should be clear that the communications infrastructure is and will remain under constant stress, a situation that the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated by establishing teleworking and distance education as definitive. This reality will require from all organizations, and in particular from the service provider, the need to pay maximum attention to investments and the proper use of these resources.
