The World Health Organization (WHO) declared this Wednesday the outbreak of mpox (monkeypox) affecting several African countries as a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).
The decision was made unanimously by a WHO Emergency Committee amid concerns that a more deadly and transmissible strain of the virus (previously known as monkeypox) has reached hitherto unaffected African regions.
This Tuesday the African Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared the outbreak a continental safety public health emergency, after having recorded 15,000 cases and 461 deaths from this virus in 2024 alone, which represents an increase of 160 % in diagnoses and 19% in deaths compared to the same period of the previous year.
