Since this Thursday, Cuba assumes the pro tempore presidency of the Group 77 plus China (G77 + China), marking the first time that the largest of the Antilles leads this negotiating bloc of developing countries.
Why is our country's participation in this international mechanism important? The G77 +China is the largest and most diverse consultation group in the multilateral sphere, with 134 member states that represent two-thirds of the membership of the United Nations Organization and 80% of the world's population.
Founded in 1964 by members of the Non-Aligned Movement at the end of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, it emerged with the objective of stimulating the economic interests of the founders and strengthening the capacity for joint negotiation within the UN.
The G77 + China is currently made up of 134 States, after the entry of South Sudan in March 2015; but it maintains its original name for historical reasons. In the case of China, although it is considered an official member, it participates and collaborates externally.
After more than 50 years of existence, the G77 has managed to remain united with multilateralism as the guiding principle of South-South cooperation strategies, despite the marked cultural, geographical, economic differences, and national realities of its members.
In the group, some of the largest economies in the world, such as China or Brazil, coexist with several of the smallest, so it is sometimes difficult to find common lines of development.
