Cuban Customs seizes 14 kilograms of drugs

The General Customs of the Republic (AGR) evidenced its policy of Zero Tolerance to drugs by the fact that from last January to May of this year it seized 14 kilograms of chemical substances of this type at its borders.

The complexity in the modes of operation is appreciable in terms of the diversity and ingenuity of concealment methods, warned Nelson Gutiérrez Acosta, director of Risk Management and Control of the institution, at a press conference.

He clarified that in that period, cocaine, marijuana, ecstasy and synthetic cannabinoids (artificial chemical compounds) predominated in the seizure and in 12 of the cases the offenders were Cubans and eight foreigners of various nationalities and origins.

In these operations against the attempts to introduce them through the air and maritime limits of the country, the internal forces and their preparation with means and equipment stood out.

Also to the inauguration in May 2022 of a modern office on operational communication in real time between international airports to counter organized crime, illicit drug trafficking and prevent terrorism (AIRCOP for its acronym in English).

Nelson Cordovés Reyes, head of the AGR, said that its operation in Terminal 3 of the José Martí International Airport has given encouraging results and its installation is even planned in the Juan Gualberto Gómez in Varadero, Matanzas province, and in others.

However, it ratified the idea of ​​perfecting its policy, with the establishment of more significant and efficient processes.

An essential objective is to achieve greater quality and agility in services and attention to the population without undermining the required security, to contribute to strengthening the economy, he argued.

In turn, Yamila Martínez Morales, general director of Customs Process, offered details on the actions implemented to facilitate the crossing of travelers and cargo, especially the flexibility of imports by natural persons with a non-commercial nature.

He mentioned a greater agility in the flows of arriving travelers and a reduction in stay times in customs halls, the increase in import capacity, in shipments of 10 to 20 kilograms, and the decrease in their value of 20 to $10, which is a 70 percent reduction in tax payments.

The entry of cell phones, computers, tablets, tires and rims, among other items and the quantities to be imported, even increased, which are dispatched by their value and not by their weight, the specialist explained.

In addition, the number of passengers who choose the Green Channel grew by 93 percent, the import of food, medicines and toilets by travelers, there was a reduction in actions for infractions and there are advances in the application of good procedures practices safety, with results from inspections by international organizations.

He emphasized the application of the Digital Declaration for Passengers due to its advantages for the latter and the authorities.
