The early morning of April 18, 1961, the second day of the fighting in Girón, began with fierce attacks by FAR tanks with the support of the anti-aircraft force. The battalions of militiamen from Cienfuegos, Matanzas, Las Villas and that of the Militia Leaders were already making themselves felt in the sands of Girón.

The plan, ordered by Fidel, was to obstruct and dislodge the invaders. Columns No.1 and No.2 of the Rebel Army, howitzer batteries and the Police battalion were also mobilized with a tank company.

The response of the Cubans against the invaders was fierce; courage and valor prevailed in each soldier. The enemy ships were repelled and some of them sunk by shrapnel from the tanks that played an exemplary role and for this reason Tanker's Day is celebrated today.
